Yam...
Suddenly I am so interested in knowing more about yam... It 's happenned when it sis my first time to try the yam drink in the cafeteria. Actually yam is vegetables..The vegetable has a rough skin which is difficult to peel, but which softens after heating. The skins vary in color from dark brown to light pink.Yams are a primary agricultural commodity in West Africa and New Guinea.
Yams are high in Vitamin C, dietary fiber, Vitamin B6, potassium, manganese;and it is low in saturated fat and sodium. Vitamin C, dietary fiber and Vitamin B6 may all promote good health.Furthermore, a product that is high in potassium and low in sodium is likely to produce a good potassium-sodium balance in the human body, and also to protect against osteoporosis and heart disease. Moreover, having a low level of saturated fat is also helpful for protection against heart disease of our body.
Yam products generally have a lower glycemic index, that is a measure of effect of carbohydrate on blood glucose level, than the potato products which means that they will provide a more sustained form of energy, and give better protection against obesity and diabetes
Yams may be served fried, boiled or pounded into a fufu ,a thick paste or porridge usually made by boiling starchy root vegetables in water .
Besides that, traditionally, this herb has been used as a treatment for indigestion, coughs, morning sickness, gallbladder pain, menstrual cramps, joint pain, and nerve pain.
